CRANE T-shirt
Crane and Pine
It is a crane design with many layers of small pine patterns. The red pine needles are called “Fukiyose” and are an old-fashioned technique in which small dots are gathered around the needles, making them look as if they have been blown together by the wind. The poem says, “The moon has set, and the pine needles sway to the sound of the cranes’ cries.” Please enjoy the tranquil “beauty of Japan” that brings together many delicate elements with a subdued color scheme.
【 Episode ~ Enjoy Japan! ~ 】
In Japan, cranes are a symbol of longevity, as the saying goes, “cranes live for a thousand years,” and this is said to be because their white feathers are reminiscent of the gray hair of old people. On the other hand, pine trees are also considered a symbol of longevity because they keep their green leaves all year round, and these two have long been known as a lucky combination. However, interestingly, the image of a crane perched on a pine branch, which is often seen in Japanese paintings, is apparently impossible in reality, given the biology of the crane and the structure of its legs. Perhaps this composition has been passed down through the ages, and it is like a “rule” for lucky charms.
This design uses several types of ‘KOMON’ patterns, ‘KOMON’ is a type of KIMONO in which intricate patterns are dyed repeatedly across the entire fabric. Most are produced using the “KATAZOME” -Japanese stencil dyeing – method, and the subjects of the patterns are extremely diverse, including flowers, natural phenomena, landscapes, utensils, and geometric patterns. The “stencils” used in “KATAZOME” are made by skilled craftsmen, and are, of course, merely a tool for dyeing fabric, but they are so packed with the charm of Japanese pattern culture that they could be appreciated as works of art in themselves. If you have the opportunity, please take a look at a variety of them.
