HEART of FISH T-shirt New!

The Heart of a fish
This is a revival of a design originally created in 1997. Despite its simple aesthetic, the design was highly popular, and we received many requests for its re-release. The kanji characters represent the proverb “If the fish shows goodwill toward the water, the water responds in kind” – meaning that if you regard someone with favor, they will likely feel the same way toward you. We added a touch of realism to the depiction of the “Yamame Fish”(cherry salmon) and flowing water, while opting for a cool, refreshing color palette. Please enjoy this expression of “Japanese IKI” (chic refinement) – a style that naturally inspires one to stand tall with poise.

The name “Yamame” means “mountain fish”, it is said that, due to its beautiful appearance, the kanji characters meaning “mountain woman” came to be used for its name during the Edo period(1603-1867). Although the fish has long been native to Japan, it was not farmed in the past – unlike today – so it was eaten only in mountainous areas and remained relatively unknown to the general public. (The fact that “Yamame” farming only began in the 1960s suggests just how difficult it was to replicate their natural mountain stream environment.) They are even known by such epithets as the “Queen of Mountain Streams” and the “Phantom Fish”. “Yamame” were considered such a high-quality fish that they were even presented to the “Shogun”. During the Edo period, fishing became popular among everyone from samurai to commoners; unique artificial flies known as “Yamame-kebari” were created, and the foundations of modern fly fishing were effectively established back then.

The wave pattern used in the background is a motif found in family crests, with their ceaseless motion, are said to symbolize immortality and longevity. They were also favored by Sengoku-period(Late 15th-Late 16th century) warlords, as the power of the waves and their rhythmic ebb and flow evoked the nature of battle. Incidentally, “Yamame” spend their entire lives in rivers and are therefore unaffected by ocean waves, but we used the image of the dynamic splashes of water leaping from the surface in this instance.
