Moon and cherry blossoms<\/strong>
\nIt is a design that arranges the moon and cherry blossoms on the large lantern of Tokyo – Asakusa Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) of Sensoji-Temple where is very famous tourist destination. The Japanese poem in the background means, All the people walking along the approach to the shrine where cherry blossoms fall, look happy and beautiful. The Kanji on the chest is ‘Tokyo – The God of Wind and Thunder’. This is the official name of ‘Kaminarimon’.<\/p>\n

\nAsakusa\u2019s Kaminarimon(Thunder Gate) is a renowned tourist attraction, yet few people seem to be aware that its formal name is actually “Furaijin-mon” (Gate of the Wind and Thunder Gods). This name derives from the statues of the Wind God and the Thunder God enshrined on either side of the gate, these figures are said to embody prayers for protection against wind and flood damage, as well as for an abundant harvest. While the exact time the gate came to be known simply as “Kaminarimon” remains unclear, a “Senryu(Old-style Japanese humorous poetry)” from the Bunka era (1804\u201318) of the Edo period contains the line, “The Wind God is a lodger at Kaminarimon,” suggesting that the name “Kaminarimon” was already in common use by that time.

\nSince its original construction in 942, the Kaminarimon Gate has repeatedly burned down and been rebuilt, notably, after it was destroyed by fire in 1865 – during the final years of the Edo period – it remained unbuilt for 95 years. The current gate was reconstructed in 1960 thanks to a donation from Mr. Konosuke Matsushita, the president of Matsushita Electric. That is why the name “Matsushita Electric” appears on the underside of the lantern. Incidentally, the formal name of Sensoji-Temple is “Kinryuzan-Sensoji(Mountain of Gold Dragon)”.<\/p>\n
