God of Battle<\/strong>
\nThis is the design based on the Kofukuji-Temple \/ Ashura statue that is the most popular Buddha statue in Japan. Ashura is a god of battle with three faces and six arms, and is one of the eight legions who protect Buddhism. The eight characters in the background mean each of the eight legions, and the characters on the back mean Ashura. Please enjoy its refined, beautiful form, rendered in a cool monochrome color scheme.<\/p>\n

\nAmong the six realms of existence (the Six Paths) in Buddhism, the deity Ashura rules over the “Realm of Ashura” – a world defined by ceaseless conflict and rage. This realm lies below the “Human Realm”, which is the destination for those driven by strong pride, attachment to the self, and suspicion. The Japanese term “Shuraba” – meaning a scene of carnage or a chaotic battleground – is said to originate from the story of Ashura, who constantly waged war against “Indra”, a deity who protects the Buddhist teachings. Yet, it is also said that Ashura eventually listened to the Buddha’s sermons, took refuge in Buddhism, and became one of the Eight Legions of guardians.

\nAshura are fierce deities of war and are typically depicted with terrifying, valiant expressions, however, the Ashura statue at Kofukuji-Temple bears a quiet, sorrowful expression, almost like that of a child. It is said to recreate a scene in which everyone has gathered around Buddha, listening intently to his words. The statue was commissioned by Empress Komyo – consort to Emperor Shomu during the Nara period(710-794) – and it is believed that she poured her feelings for her late mother and child into the figure.<\/p>\n
