\n“YUSHOKU” pattern refers to the elegant and dignified patterns used in the lives of the court nobility from the Heian period(794-1185) onwards, these are considered the origin of various patterns that subsequently developed in Japan. The term “YUSHOKU” relates to the established protocols governing court ceremonies and events, and at the time, the colors and patterns one could use were strictly determined by social rank. As courtly attire relied heavily on woven fabrics, most of these designs feature orderly, repeating motifs, showcasing a wide variety of patterns inspired by nature, plants, and animals.

\n“YUSHOKU” pattern can be considered the starting point of Japan’s culture of decorative patterns, but in fact, their roots are said to lie in Persia, and if one traces them back even further, they lead all the way to ancient Egypt and Greece. Viewed in this light, I do get a sense of orientalism in traditional Japanese patterns. This isn’t just about patterns, but things that were introduced from the continent were slowly refined over time, eventually transforming into something uniquely Japanese.<\/p>\n
