\nNewts have been living in Japan since ancient times, but perhaps because of their appearance, they have been treated as monsters, and have not often been the subject of art or crafts. I have not found any old stories in which newts appear, but there is one story that says that in the Edo period, roasted newts were popular as a love potion. Apparently, people believed that if you sprinkled roasted male newts on yourself and roasted female newts on your partner, the two would be attracted to each other.

\nWhen you hear the phrase “Good deeds are like water”, many people probably think of SAKE – alcohol (because there is a famous SAKE by this name in Japan), but this is actually a phrase preached by the Chinese philosopher Laozi. It means that the greatest good is like water, which benefits all things, but does not fight with others, changes shape to fit the container it is in, and places itself in a low place that people dislike. At the same time, Laozi also teaches that water is flexible, yet has the power to move solid things. In times of war, these words appealed to the importance of avoiding meaningless conflicts and living a peaceful life, but even those of us living today can relate to them.<\/p>\n
