\nThis is an auspicious design based on the image of a fox, said to be a messenger of INARI-The god of food. The square characters on the chest symbolize “abundant harvest.”<\/p>\n

\nINARI-GOD has long been revered across Japan as a deity of abundant harvests, but today, the deity is also worshipped for bringing business prosperity and the safety and well-being of the household. While there are various theories as to why the fox became the messenger of INARI-GOD, the prevailing view is that the image of the deity \u2014 said to appear during the rice-planting season and return to the mountains after the harvest\u2014overlapped with the behavior of foxes, which appear in human settlements in the spring and retreat to the mountains in the autumn.

\nThere are other theories – such as foxes exterminating the mice that ate the rice, or the resemblance of drooping rice ears to a fox’s tail – but regardless of the reason, the sight of foxes running through the fields was once a common part of everyday life in Japan.<\/p>\n
